PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an engine capable of maintaining the high detection accuracy of a rotation angle sensor installed near a camshaft. SOLUTION: The rotation angle sensor 43 and a hydraulic control valve 14 are arranged in such positional relationship that the tip detecting surface 43a of the rotation angle sensor 43 disposed close to a sensor rotor 42 assembled to an exhaust camshaft 5 faces the inside of a jet locus S of return oil discharged from a variable valve timing mechanism and jetted from a drain hole 3e provided in a cam cap 3, via a lower drain port of the hydraulic control valve 14 fitted to the cam cap 3. Further, the tip detecting surface 43a is positioned ahead in the rotating direction of the exhaust camshaft 5 shown by an arrow mark (a) so that the return oil is positively carried to the tip detecting surface 43a side by the rotation of the sensor rotor 42.
