PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external elevator and a method of its construction capable of shortening a construction period for installing the external elevator, reducing a waste generated from an elevator foundation part at the time of replacing the elevator, and suppressing costs for the construction. SOLUTION: The external elevator 25 is built along an existing building 26 in such a way that a connecting corridor of the buiding 26 and the elevator 25 are connected with each other through a connecting passage 28, wherein an underground pit 32 of the elevator 25 is located in an excavated part 34. The underground pit 32 of the elevator is formed of a steel frame pit 33 composed of a single piece assembly of steel frames 39, and the steel frame pit 39 is integrated with an elevator steel skeleton 30, and an external elevator unit is completed as one unit from an uppermost story roof 44 to the steel frame pit 33.
