SCRAMBLING CODE GENERATION FOR UMTS COMMUNICATIONS

The invention relates to the generation of a scrambling code for UMTS communications. According to the invention, a pseudo-random generator (1X) in a scrambler is first set to a pre-determined status which is dependent on the number of a code with I bits. Initialisation (2) and status (3X) memory elements, which reduce the memory capacity of the scrambler, store the pre-determined state. A status saved in the status memory is restored (RESTORE) to the generator before the generation of any sub-code with I/M chips. A clock pulse counter (5) activates I/M shifts in the generator from the restored state in order to generate a sub-code. The status of the generator is saved (SAVE) in the status memory after the last generation of a sub-code. The pre-determined status is transferred from the initialisation memory in the generator at the start of each subsequent generation of the code. The scrambler is a Gold-type scrambler with two pseudo-random generators (1X, 1Y) for the scrambling of complex symbols (D1, DQ) for UMTS communications.
