PURPOSE: A method for measuring thickness of paper money in a paper money counting machine is provided to measure the thickness of the paper money by using a ratio between an initial voltage and a voltage detected from a light detection sensor. CONSTITUTION: An initial voltage outputted from a light detection sensor is stored before paper money is inserted into a paper money counting machine(S10). A ratio between the initial voltage and the voltage detected from the light detection sensor is calculated after the paper money is inserted into the paper money counting machine(S11,S12). The thickness of the paper money is measured by using the calculated ratio(S14). A counting process for the inserted paper money is performed by using the calculated ratio(S16).
