<p>A method for clamping together two coupling flanges (20, 22) has each flange fitted with a separate spreader sleeve (42, 52) with inner tapering bores which are aligned to take a tapering fastener (32). At least one of the sleeves has its bore eccentric w.r.t. the fastener axis to enable the fitter to align the sleeve bores and correct for tolerances in the flange fastening bores. The butting ends of the sleeves are separated by a spacer ring (62) and an air gap. The fastener is driven mechanically and/or hydraulically to spread the sleeves and fill the flange fastening bore with metal. The fasteners are further secured by nuts (40) fitted to threaded ends (36, 38) of the fasteners.</p> |
