A wireless station user 10 is provided with a unified messaging protocol that enhances the currently available messaging capabilities of SMS. The user is provided with the capability to compose at least one distribution list for SMS messages. The list can be stored in a memory 24, 29 of the station, or in a message server 40. The user is also provided with the capability to send messages to at least one distribution list on a user determined, periodic basis. The user is further provided with the capability to obtaining content from an external source 60, to composing an SMS incorporating the content, and send the SMS to recipients 70 defined in the distribution list. <IMAGE>
