The present invention involves a method for power control in a wireless code division multiple access communication system, the method comprising: transmitting a first code at a set initial power level and repeating the transmitting of the first code at a first ramp up amount; detecting an acknowledgement indicating the transmitted first code was received; and in response to detecting the acknowledgment, transmitting a second code at a power level increased by a second amount, the second code is associated with the fist code.
