A method and apparatus of retaining a gas turbine engine blade (10) in a fixed predetermined position includes the following steps: inserting an airfoil portion (14) of the gas turbine engine blade (10) within a device (28) so as to be loosely held therein; orienting the gas turbine engine blade (10) so as to have a predetermined relationship with the device (28); providing an initial clamping force on the device (28) so as to retain the gas turbine engine blade (10) in the predetermined position; and, actuating a mechanism (84) associated with the device (28) to provide a fixed clamping force on the airfoil portion (14) so that the gas turbine engine blade (10) is retained in the predetermined position.
