An emboli capturing device comprises an embolism collector element (363) comprising an open end and a closed end and a filter medium therebetween, wherein the filter medium has open areas through which fluids can flow, and wherein emboli of a size greater than the open areas are captured in the filter medium, and a core member. A portion of the embolism collector element is attached to the core member. The embolism collector element has a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration and is predisposed to assume the expanded configuration. The filter medium may comprise one or more elongated members configured to provide the open areas in the filter medium. A second collector element (364) may be disposed inside the embolism collector element.
