PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for converting an ATM adaptive layer 2 address using a bit binary tree are provided to reduce time required for searching an AAL2(ATM Adaptation Layer 2) address by using a sequential search table. CONSTITUTION: Three AAL2 addresses each consisting of 3 bits are allocated to a memory in an lu interface. In order to search an AAL2 address to be changed, a bit binary tree is used. Namely, the AAL2 address that is not used is searched by using the bit binary tree. In detail, the non-used AAL2 address is searched by sequentially searching from a node 1 to a node 3. The search of the non-used AAL2 address and the allocation of the searched AAL2 address to the memory are handled by a controller included in the lu interface.
