PURPOSE: A defect area managing method is provided to convert a sector number only of the first sector of a defect block registered in an SDL(Secondary Defect List) into a PDL(Primary Defect List) when a reformatting process is performed, and to display the PDL at a PDL entry, thereby effectively managing a DMA(Defect Management Area) list and reducing an overflow generation of a DMA. CONSTITUTION: When a system is on or an optical disk is mounted(701), a system reads information on defect sectors listed in a PDL and defect sectors listed in an SDL(702). If a user selects a recording or a reproducing process(703), the system records or reproduces data on the optical disk(704). If the system meets defect sectors registered in a P-list or a G1-list of the PDL, the system records or reproduces the data in a slipping alternative method(705). If the system meets defect sectors registered in a G2-list of the PDL(706), the system decides whether a G2F flag is 1(707). If so, the system performs a slipping alternative process for all sectors of a block1 including the defect sectors(708). If the recording or the reproducing is completed, the system completes the procedure(709).
