PURPOSE: A washing machine having a laundry floatation-detecting device is provided to prevent the scatter of water and the damage of the laundry generated by the floatation of the laundry by detecting that the laundry as a pillow floats over the constant height. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine having a laundry floatation-detecting device is composed of an outer case; a water tank(2) installed in the outer case; a washing tub(3) rotatively mounted in the water tank; a driving motor(7) for rotating the washing tub; and the detecting device for detecting that the laundry received in the washing tub is over the constant height. The detecting device is a distance sensor(70) installed to a tub cover(8) or a lid(30) disposed to the upper part of the water tank to detect the distance separated from the floating laundry.
