The process involves acquiring biometric characteristics using an image sensor, especially of a skin fold, of a person to be identified. Preferably the image is of the skin covering finger joints on the underside of the hand, the bones of the fingers, or the wrinkles on the forehead. Reference data, pre-acquired and stored in a database (40), is compared to data extracted from an image of the person's hand. The folded image of the skin provides contextual information in alphanumeric form. The system may operate in conjunction with IC cards carried by users. An independent claim is also included for a system for identifying persons.
