In a method for electrochemical disinfection of water, in cell(s) comprising an anode (1) and cathode (2), supplied with electrical current and contained in a casing (3) with an inlet (4) and outlet (5) for water, using a combination of direct virucidal, bactericidal and bacteriostatic action due anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction effects on dissolved organic materials and indirect, complementary bactericidal and lasting bacteriostatic action due to oxidants formed by electrolysis of water, the water is circulated in laminar or quasi-laminar manner in the space between the catalytic faces of the anode and cathode. An independent claim is included for apparatus for the process, comprising a cell with two electrodes in the form of plates formed from or coated with electrically conductive material.
