PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for recovering sericin, by which the sericin can efficiently be recovered from silk fibers without excessively lowering the molecular weight, and to provide the sericin obtained by the method. SOLUTION: This method for recovering the sericin comprises swelling silk fibers with 100 to 140°C water, steam, an acidic aqueous solution, an alkaline aqueous solution, enzyme-containing water or the like and then treating the swollen silk fibers by the physical treatment such as stirring, compressing, vibration or grinding to separate the sericin from fibroin. Further, the method for recovering the sericin comprises swelling silk fibers cut in an average length of≤20 mm or pulverized with 0 to 140°C water, steam, an acidic aqueous solution, an alkaline aqueous solution, enzyme-containing water or the like and then treating the swollen silk fibers by the physical treatment to separate the sericin from fibroin.
