PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display apparatus by which light utilizing efficiency is high and number of expressible gradation is increased by leaps and bounds compared with conventional technology, and a video display method. SOLUTION: The projection type display apparatus comprises a light source (11) which emits white light, a continuous spectral light forming means (12) which converts the white light emitted from the light source into spectral light continuously distributed in space, a light valve (15) which performs time sharing modulation of incident light by driving each pixel element two-dimensionally arranged corresponding to each pixel of an color image to be displayed and a spectral light scanning means (14) which makes continuous spectral light patrol in a direction on the light valve and forms the color image.
