PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a silver halide emulsion in large quantities and to improve the productivity. SOLUTION: During the time from the end of a desalting step to the end of a chemical sensitization step in formation of silver halide particles, a compound is added which is represented by the formula: HO-(CH(CH<SB>3</SB>)CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>x</SB>-(CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>O)<SB>y</SB>-(CH<SB>2</SB>CH(CH<SB>3</SB>)O)<SB>x</SB>-H (where x, y and z each represent an average degree of polymerization, x>0, y>0 and z>0; a mass average molecular weight is 2,000-3,500; and an ethylene oxide content is 10-25 mass%) and has a cloud point of≥28°C.
