Safety device for a motor vehicle has a hazard warning light switch (1) for switching-on and off of a waning light system and at least a control unit (2-4) that is linked to the hazard warning light switch via the vehicle wiring system or bus (5). When the hazard warning light switch is activated, the control unit is influenced in such a way that is switched into a safe control condition in which it can be controlled by a passenger without active intervention by the driver.
