PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a melanin production inhibitor which is safe and can be compounded with a cosmetic in an arbitrary amount without deteriorating the quality of the cosmetic. SOLUTION: This melanin production inhibitor contains a compound represented by formula (1) (R1 to R13 are each H, a 1 to 6C hydrocarbon group, a 1 to 5C alkoxy or a halogen atom; R14 to R17 are each H, a 1 to 6C hydrocarbon group, a 1 to 5C alkoxy, carboxy or a halogen atom; M1 to M2 are each H or an alkali metal) as an active ingredient.
