<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to adjust the sharpness of an image while reducing the jaggedness and edge blurring of an image accompanying the resolution conversion and size conversion. <P>SOLUTION: The user sets parameter values concerening the enlargement rate and sharpness of an image. An interpolation coefficient arithmetic means 20 finds an interpolation coefficient (a) corresponding to relative positions of an interpolating pixel y0 to original pixels x0 and x1. A pixel value difference arithmetic means 24 finds the pixel value differenceΔbetween the original pixels x0 and x1. A an interpolation coefficient converting function gradient value setting means 26 indicates a parameter valueαconcerned with a gradient according to the pixel value differenceΔby a converting function gradient parameter value indicating function whose characteristics are changed according to the sharpness parameter value th. An interpolation coefficient converting means 22 sets a gradient of a center section A0 of an interpolation coefficient converting function according to the parameter valueαconcerned with the gradient and converts an interpolation coefficient (a) into a converted interpolated coefficient a'.
