PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a road shape recognition device which acquires more map data at a branch point without lowering operation processing speed. SOLUTION: This device is equipped with: an own car position detection means 101 for detecting the position of own vehicle; a road information storage means 102 for storing road shape data at least as an aggregate of point data; a road shape acquisition means 103 for acquiring only in a fixed range, the point data on the road shape in the traveling direction of own vehicle based on the own car position detected by the own car position detection means; a branch point detection means 104 for detecting whether a branch point of the road exists in the point data acquired by the road shape acquisition means or not; and a road shape acquisition range restriction means 105 for restricting the acquisition range of the point data on the road shape ahead of the branch point when the branch point is acquired by the road shape acquisition means.
