PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cermet which contains free carbon grains, and is optimum to a cutting tool for cutting various materials to be cut such as steel, cast iron, heat resistant alloys and nonferrous metals or to a wear resistant tool such as a die. SOLUTION: As for the cermet, at the time of uniformly dispersing a specified amount of residual free carbon grains, when used as a cutting tool, the friction resistance of the material to be cut is reduced, and further, the deposition of the material to be cut on the tool is reduced, so that the service life of the tool is improved. In the cermet, the total of the cross-sectional areas of the free carbon grains in the cross-sectional polished structure is 1.1 to 8% of the whole area of the observed face. It is particularly preferable that the area of one grain of the free carbon grains is 0.005 to 10μm<SP>2</SP>, and the number of the grains is 15,000 to 100,000 pieces per mm<SP>2</SP>.
