An aqueous multi-phase liquid fabric softener composition comprised of at least two phases, all of said phases being transparent or translucent, said fabric softener composition comprising: (a) from about 5% to about 45%, by weight, of a cationic softening material; (b) from about 5% to about 15%, by weight, of a solvent having a partition coefficient of log P of from about 0.70 to about 2.0; (c) from about 0.2% to about 1.5%, by weight, of a mineral electrolyte; (d) a water-immiscible oil-based perfume in an amount sufficient to provide the desired degree of fragrance; and (e) balance water whereby said multi-phase softener composition is capable of being converted to a milky macroemulsion upon dilution with water, and wherein said softener composition does not contain a polyoxyalkylene amide surface active agent.
