The one-piece structure is constructed from a repeating pattern of triangles (1), whereby the sides of the triangles are designed in such a way that they deform quite differently under equal load, this being brought about by the use of different materials or by different sizing. The open triangular structure is covered by a thin material. The structure can have one of a number of deformation couplings, such as torsion and compression/extension, torsion and bending, torsion and shear, bend and compression/extension, bend and shear, or shear and compression/extension.
