PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon fiber excellent in fiber direction properties including compressive strength, tensile strength and tensile modulus and moderate adhesion to matrix resin, and to provide a fiber-reinforced composite material using the same. SOLUTION: The carbon fiber strand meets the following relationships: (1) YM>-0.092Lc<SP>2</SP>+13.619Lc+27.6 and (2) 14≤Lc≤17 ( wherein, YM is strand modulus(GPa), and Lc is crystallite size(Å) ).
