PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reader which can appropriately drive a step motor or the like in accordance with the communication speed of an interface. SOLUTION: A CPU 11 moves the (N+1)-th line of a film document 26 to an imaging position by a line sensor 18 at a time t1 and transfers read data of the (N-1) line of the film document 26 to a host computer 1 through an I/F circuit 17 in a section for reading data of an N-th line when a transfer rate of the I/F circuit 17 is faster than a prescribed speed. The CPU 11 moves the (N+1)-th line of the film document 26 to the imaging position at a time t2 (t2>t1) and transfers read data of the (N-1)-th line to the host computer 1 in the section for reading the data of the N-th line when the transfer rate is slower than the prescribed speed. An excitation pattern of a motor 20 is defined as a micro step in a low-speed driving mode corresponding to the time t2 and as 1-2 phase excitation in a high-speed driving mode corresponding to the time t1.
