PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charging roll capable of advantageously preventing or suppressing the occurrence of charging sound while satisfactorily securing an image forming performance and to provide a charge roller which can reduce power consumption of the image forming device. SOLUTION: In a charging roll 10, a dc voltage and an ac voltage are superimposed and applied in the state that the charging roll 10 is brought into contact with an image carrier and, thereby, the surface of the image carrier is charged. Therein, a conductive base layer 14 is composed of conductive elastic material and a plurality of recessed grooves 18 extended continuously in parallel with the axial direction and over the entire length are formed in the peripheral direction leaving a prescribed distance on the outer peripheral surface of the conductive base layer 14. Thereby, elastically deformable protruded stripes 20 which are extended continuously in parallel with the axial direction and over the entire length between the recessed grooves 18 adjacent to each other in the peripheral direction among a plurality of the recessed grooves 18 are respectively integrally disposed. As a result, a spacing part 22 permitting the elastic deformation therein is formed between the conductive base layer 14 and a resistance regulating layer 16. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
