Process for regenerating an ion exchanger bed (24) comprises passing regenerating chemicals through the bed; displacing the chemicals from the pipe lines and further moving the mass transfer zone with the diluting liquid or drive liquid; back flushing the bed with displacing liquid, in which the bed is in the fluidized bed and is pressed to the upper inert material layer (28); and quickly washing the bed with displacing liquid from above to below. The empty pipe speeds in the last two steps are higher than in the first two steps. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the process comprising a cylindrical container (10) with suitable inlet and outlet (14a, 14b) in the form of torospherical heads; and a lower liquid distribution device (22) in the region of an ion exchange charge (24).
