<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make combustible while maintaining engine outputs at the practicable value with an air-fuel ratio exceeding the value that has been conventionally deemed to be a limit and to improve a fuel consumption rate, and to reduce the amounts of emissions of exhaust components including nitrogen oxides (NO<SB>X</SB>), in an diesel engine. <P>SOLUTION: A diesel engine (E) includes a diesel engine body (1), an intake air heating device (2) for heating intake air introduced into a combustion chamber (101) of the diesel engine body (1). The intake air heating device (2) takes in air through an air filter (21) and has an air supply pipe (20) that penetrates an exhaust passage (17) and leads to an intake air passage (12). The air supply pipe (20) has a heat exchanging section (22) provided within the exhaust passage (17), and a heated air discharge section (23) provided within the intake air passage (12), and supplies the air that has been heated by exhaust heat at the heat exchanging section (22) to the intake air passage (12) and heats up the intake air. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
