<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon dioxide sensor capable of being activated at a room temperature and being less influenced by humidity. <P>SOLUTION: The carbon dioxide sensor has a detection electrode 10 and an opposing electrode 20 installed on one surface of an electrolyte 30. The detection electrode 10 contains a metal oxide and a metal carbonate including a plurality of components. Preferably, the metal carbonate contains a first component consisting of an alkali metal carbonate and a second component consisting of at least one selected from the group consisting of alkali earth metal carbonates, transition metal carbonates, ZnCO<SB>3</SB>, CdCO<SB>3</SB>, In(CO<SB>3</SB>)<SB>3</SB>, PbCO<SB>3</SB>and Bi<SB>2</SB>(CO<SB>3</SB>)<SB>3</SB>.
