PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the occurrence of variations in the behavior of an own vehicle accompanied by the switching of a preceding vehicle when the own vehicle changes a lane. SOLUTION: In a traveling control unit for vehicles, when the own vehicle passes a point that is behind by a preceding vehicle switching distance Lch (Step S8), it is decided whether the lane need to be changed when passing a course change point in an intersection or the like (Step S12) and then the lane need to be changed. Additionally, when a vehicle in front of the own vehicle is not in a tendency of changing the line to the course-changed lane of the own vehicle (Step S20), and distance L1 to the preceding vehicle in front of the own vehicle is larger than following distance L2 to a preceding vehicle candidate traveling on the course-changed lane (Step S22) and the vehicle speed of the preceding vehicle candidate is extremely slower than the own vehicle (Step S24), the preceding vehicle candidate is switched as the preceding vehicle, and control is made to follow the preceding vehicle candidate of the course-changed lane (Step S26).
