PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera that performs focus control at high speed and with high accuracy without giving unnatural sensation to a user. SOLUTION: The image of an object 11 obtained through a photographic lens 21 is converted to an electric image signal by an imager 23 and then, in accordance with the contrast signal of the object image, the photographic lens 21 is brought into focus by means of a CPU 20 and a lens driving part 27. Also, the result of the image pickup by the imager 23 is displayed on an LCD 32. Further, in a range finder part 17, a distance to the object 11 is measured by using light receiving lenses 15a, 15b and sensor arrays 16a, 16b and, in accordance with the measurement, the photographic lens 21 is brought into focus by means of the CPU 20 and the lens driving part 27. During the operation of the LCD 32, external light AF and imager AF are used each in its proper way at the time of control of the photographic lens 21, with both used depending on a situation to detect and correct errors.
