PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new asymmetric acylating catalyst having high catalytic activity and stereoselectivity and simply producible from a readily available raw material in high yield. SOLUTION: The asymmetric acylating catalyst comprises a new hydroxyproline derivative represented by formula (1) äwherein, R<SP>1</SP>is an amino acid residue in which the carboxylic acid moiety of an amino acid is protected and is a group or the like in which the R<SP>1</SP>is bound through the amino acid residue having the protected amino acid of the amino acid residue or an oligopeptide chain having the amino acid residue or a group [CO-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>z</SB>-CO]}. In the hydroxyproline derivative, specific substituents are bound to carbon atoms at the 2- and the 4-positions of the pyrrolidine ring, e.g. äN-(4-pyridyl)-O-[N(α)-t-butoxycarbonyl-N(τ)-methylhistidinyl]hydroxyprolyl}tryptophan methyl ester.
