An illuminated tile for floor or wall has a sandwich construction of two outer plates (1) of safety glass an inner luminescent layer with connecting electrodes. The outer surfaces of the tile are surface textured with a non slip relief. The luminescent layer is applied to one plate with an electric contact layer. The second plate is coated with an insulating layer and the second electric contact layer. Suitable luminescent pigments include zinc sulphide with cadmium crystals and silver pigments. The inner layers are protected by a silicon rubber coating around the outer edge of the tile.
