PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for detecting a label capable of detecting all labels by coupling an optical system with a mechanical system. SOLUTION: The apparatus turns on/off an optical detecting means by a mechanical detecting means that mechanically detects the thickness of a label, and outputs after amplifying the on/off signal of the optical detecting means. The difference in received light quantity in numerical value between when light is shielded and when light is received is set to be high, and an intermediate value between both numeric values is used to adjust the detection position of the optical detecting means, which corresponds to the thickness of a label.
