PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light emitting device having high design flexibility for the size of a light guide plate, reducing the length of a light source, and emitting light with high luminance and evenness. SOLUTION: The surface light emitting device comprises vertical row light source groups 31, 32 having two light sources arranged vertically in a same axis, along the side surface of the light guide plate 1. The vertical row light source groups 31, 32 are provided in parallel in a direction of the surface thickness of the light guide plate.
