Use 5-[4-[2-(N-methyl-N-(2-pyridyl)amino)ethoxy]-benzyl] thiazolidine-2.4-dione (compound I) or the tautomeric form thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof for manufacturing a medicament reducing post-ischaemic injury of the heart and/or improving the functional recovery of the heart following myocardial ischaemia in a human or non-human mammal, wherein the composition is adapted for an acute administration such that the Compound (I) dose or the tautomeric form thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is higher than the dose associated with antihyperglycemic effect. 2. Use of claim 1, wherein the medicament comprises Compound (I) or the tautomeric form thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof and a thrombolytic agent. 3. Use of claim 1, wherein the thrombolytic agent is streptokinase. 4. Use of claim 1, wherein in a human or non-human mammal suffers from diabetes.
