<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method and an apparatus for reducing a hip joint fracture by utilizing a minimally invasive procedure which does not require incisions of the quadriceps. <P>SOLUTION: To position a femoral implant, an incision is made along the greater trochanter. Since surroundings of the greater trochanter are not covered with muscles, the incision is made and the wound developed through the skin and fascia to expose the greater trochanter, without incising muscle. After exposing the greater trochanter, a new instrument is utilized to form a cavity in the femur extending from the greater trochanter into the femoral head and further extending from the greater trochanter into the intramedullary canal of the femur. After the femoral cavity is formed, a femoral implant is inserted into the cavity in the femur. The femoral implant is thereafter secured in the femur, with a part of the implant extending to and secured in the femoral head and with a part of the implant extending to and secured in the femoral shaft. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
