PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of determining if a document has errors regardless of gradient information derived from the gradient of the document's background, and an image reader provided therewith. SOLUTION: A document such as a copy or facsimile is read by a CCD image sensor 135 and input to a data error detecting part 145 via an A/D converter 131 and a correcting means as image data. The maximum and minimum values of its gradient information are detected and compared respectively with a black criterion and a white criterion. When the document read is totally white or black, it is detected and a warning message or the like is issued by an error processing means 250. Because the detection of data errors is carried out prior to binarization of the image data by a binarizing means 240, the white criteria or the like is varied so that even if, for example, the gradient of the document's background is intermediate gradient, the document with no characters, images or the like formed thereon can be determined as an error.
