PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning unit capable of exhibiting excellent cleaning performance even when using an image carrier which hardly forms wear particles on the surface and is hardly cleaned by means of a cleaning means, and to provide an image forming apparatus equipped with the cleaning unit. SOLUTION: The cleaning unit 10 for removing stuck material on the image carrier 11 disposed on the image forming apparatus 100 according to a surface movement of the image carrier 11, comprises a cleaning member 1 and a paying-out means 3 which sends out the cleaning member 1 toward the image carrier 11. Therein, the cleaning member 1 is arranged so as to be abutted on the image carrier 11, allows the abutting part to be scraped by the sliding abrasion with the image carrier 11 accompanying the movement of the surface of the image carrier 11 and supplies the particles imparting lubricity onto the image carrier 11.
