PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce pumping loss and improve fuel economy, while maintaining combustion stability in a partial load region, in an internal combustion engine adjusting intake air flow by a variable valve system. SOLUTION: When judging that the operating condition of the internal combustion engine 10 is in a partial load, a control unit 40 fully opens a throttle valve 31 and retards valve closing timing of a suction valve 161 via the variable valve system 20. The control unit 40 injects fuel to a suction port 16 via a fuel injection valve IJ in the middle of an exhaust stroke, and injects a predetermined amount of hydrogen to the suction port 16 via a hydrogen injection valve HIJ in the latter half of the suction stroke when judging that the combustion condition of the internal combustion engine 10 is unstable, based on fluctuation of combustion pressure detected by a combustion pressure sensor 50. In addition, the control unit 40 determines ignition timing in accordance with the obtained operating condition and performs spark ignition via a spark plug 30. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
