A data processing device capable of writing and/or reading program data to/from a plurality of types of recording medium includes: a reception section for receiving a signal relating to program data; a judgment section for identifying the type of the recording medium mounted; a recording processing section for recording the program data obtained from the signal via stream recording process performing neither decoding or encoding, or the encode recording process performing at least encoding of the program data, onto the recording medium; a selection section for selecting the stream recording process or the encode recording process according to the type of the recording medium; a calculation section for selecting a first remaining amount calculation process based on the remaining amount of the recording medium and the program data transmission rate or a second remaining amount calculation process based on the encoding rate and calculating the remaining time usable for performing recording onto the recording medium by the selected calculation process; and a display section for displaying the remaining time.
