A relay for hierarchical retransmissions in multimedia streaming

This invention is related to a method for packet transmission in a media streaming environment, wherein a media server transmits data packets via a first link to a relay station and the relay station transmits the data packets via a second link to a destination terminal and to the relay station. In order to reduce the latency in loss recoveries by means of packet retransmissions in a media streaming environment via lossy wireless links, the invention introduces a rate adoption entity at the media server, an error processing entity and a local-loop retransmission entity at the relay station and a loss detection entity at the destination terminal. These entities allow to perform error handling at the different entities of the streaming environment that individually handle packet retransmission depending on where a data transmission error in the streaming environment occurred, thereby reducing latency in packet retransmission.
