The content of a data buffer memory 503in a streaming tape drive 500 is monitored. When the amount of data in the buffer 503 becomes less than a predetermined level a data compression engine 502 is disabled to reduce the frequency of stopping and starting data recording. When the buffer 503 fills up past a predetermined level compression is again enabled. The speed of tape travel past the recording head 5050 may also be varied by a servo system 511, depending on how much data is in the buffer 503. |
