A system and an apparatus for determining the state of charge of a battery, the battery (4) has a sensing device to measure the battery capacity. A reusable state of charge indicator (1) has a microprocessor compatible with different battery types and pre-programmable to determine state of charge based on value received from the sensing device. The battery and the state of charge indicator are electrically connected using one or more contact (3a-3c, 8a-8c) for providing voltage drop information from the sensing device to the microprocessor.
