The present invention relates to a cost effective and industrially advantageous process for the preparation of imipenem of high purity, which comprises dissolving crude imipenem in warm water to which some base has been added to obtain a solution, subjecting the resultant solution to activated carbon treatment, and adding an organic solvent to precipitate imipenem monohydrate as a crystalline product.
