1,197,044. Vehicle steering mechanism. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. 5 Feb., 1968 [10 Feb., 1967], No. 5660/68. Heading F2Q. In a vehicle steering gear having an input screw 1 rotatably supported between ball or roller bearings mounted in a gear housing 4, a nut 6 engaging the screw through recirculating balls 7, and a rocker shaft 13 carrying a toothed sector 12 which meshes a rack 11 formed on the nut 6, the nut is mounted with play in a bore 8 of the housing 4 so that under load, forces originating from the rocker shaft 13 are transmitted via peripheral cylindrical surfaces 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP> of the nut to the wall of the bore 8. A return tube 10 for the balls 7 is housed between the surfaces 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP>. Sector 12 is conical and rocker shaft 13 is axially adjustable. With no load there is no backlash between the rack 11 and sector 12. Under load, the screw 1 is deflected, the play between the nut 6 and the bore 8 is taken up, and there is backlash between the rack and sector. The end bearing of the screw shaft 1 is mounted in an adjustable plate 5 screw-threaded into the housing 4 and retained by a locknut 14. |
