Improvements in mobile communication device security

A mobile communication device 105 includes a keypad 103 and a retractable holder 107 for a smart card (e.g. a SIM card). The smart card holder 107 contains a solenoid (213, fig.2a) for locking the holder in a closed position. The device stores a security code which is associated with the smart card holder 107. When the user wishes to remove the smart card, they enter the security code onto the mobile device 105 via the keypad 103. If the entered code is the same as the stored code, the mobile device 105 energises the solenoid (213) to allow the holder 107 to be opened and the smart card to be replaced. If the code is entered incorrectly the smart card holder 107 will be physically locked shut by the solenoid (213). The solenoids de-energised position is with the piston (215) extended, therefore, even removal of the battery will result in the smart card holder remaining locked.
