PURPOSE: To obtain an optical nonlinear waveguide in which a nonlinear optical material having a large absorption coefft. is used by selectively giving nonlinear optical characteristics only to a part of the core and decreasing the absorption loss in the core part except for the part having nonlinear optical characteristics. CONSTITUTION: This optical waveguide consists of a core 2 formed on a substrate 1 and a clad 3 surrounding the core and has an active part 4 having large nonlinear optical characteristics only in a part of the core 2. Such a material that changes nonlinear optical characteristics by irradiation of high power laser light is used for the core. As for fine particles included in a particle- dispersed glass used for the core 2 of the optical waveguide, semiconductor fine particles, metal particles or particles comprising these can be used. As for the source material of semiconductor fine particles, a 2-6 group compd. such as cadmium telluride, cadmium selenide, cadmium sulfide or a mixed crystal of them, or a 3-5 compd. such as gallium arsenide can be used. As for the source material of metal fine particles, gold, silver and copper can be used. |
