[Class 53] A stem 10 carried by a float 12 for indicating the electrolyte level is observed through a glass dome 9 secured to a hollow screw - threaded plug 6. To prevent spray from the electrolyte being deposited on the dome a trap 17 is supported on a flange 5 below the plug 6. The trap consists of a perforated receptacle containing glass wool or other material that will absorb spray. The stem 10 fits over a projection 11 on the float and is slidable thereon for adjusting the height of the stem which is closed by a cap 13. The float 12 is open at the bottom and to prevent gas which collects in the float from escaping the projection 11 is closed by a plug 11. The stem 10 operates in a guide tube 15 secured to the trap 17. Longitudinal ribs are provided on the stem 10 or tube 15 to prevent capillary attraction. A gas vent 21 is formed in the plug 6 and to facilitate the escape of air from the battery when it is being filled with electrolyte after the removal of the plug 6 an additional vent 22 is provided in the top of the battery. A groove 23 filled with grease prevents acid creepage. |
